Trading activity on Binance futures underwent a sharp rotation in 2026, first concentrating heavily in Bitcoin and Ethereum before shifting back toward altcoins within weeks.
Binance futures volume reached $28.74 billion on June 29, a week-over-week increase of 18%. Despite the rise in total activity, the distribution of that volume changed substantially. Bitcoin represented 47.9% of the total, while Ethereum accounted for 29.2%. Solana added enough activity to bring the combined share of the three largest assets to 84.7%.
The move came at the expense of a number of mid-cap tokens. Futures volume for ASTER fell 76% during the period, while WLD declined 48%. HYPE and ZEC recorded smaller but still significant drops of 35% and 26%, respectively. Across the 20 altcoins monitored, 12 recorded net outflows during the observed trading windows.
Altcoins regain market share by August
The concentration in Bitcoin and Ethereum did not last. By August 2026, altcoins accounted for 65% of Binance futures volume, the highest share recorded in two years. Bitcoin’s portion had fallen to about 21%, and Ethereum’s share stood at roughly 13.6%.
The figures represent a 16-percentage-point increase in altcoin share followed by an 18-point rebound within roughly two months. That scale of movement indicates a significant change in how traders allocated leveraged exposure across the market.
Volume concentration on major derivatives venues can offer a useful view of risk appetite. A high combined share for Bitcoin and Ethereum may reflect a preference for more established assets, while greater participation in altcoins generally points to stronger speculative demand.
ASTER and WLD may remain important tokens to monitor because they experienced some of the steepest declines during the initial rotation. A sustained recovery in their trading activity could suggest that the June shift was temporary. If volume remains weak even as broader sentiment improves, it could point to lasting liquidity problems in those markets.
Bitcoin and Ethereum together represented almost 77% of Binance futures volume in late June. A return toward the 35% to 40% range would indicate that speculative activity had become more evenly distributed across the wider crypto market.
